Supposons toutefois que vous utilisiez une adresse mail Gmail avec l'interface Gmail. Dans ce cas, cela n'est pas nécessaire car le client de messagerie y est déjà connecté car il n'utilise pas de services de messagerie externes.
Mais si vous souhaitez utiliser une adresse mail externe avec l'interface Gmail, vous devrez ajouter le serveur IMAP de l'ESP externe à Gmail.

Un serveur IMAP utilise généralement deux ports : 143 et 993.
Le port 143 est le port par défaut mais il n'offre aucun cryptage. Le port 993 est utilisé pour les connexions sécurisées via le cryptage TLS/SSL.
L'IMAP présente certains avantages distincts par rapport aux anciens protocoles tels que POP3.
